I confess that at the age of twenty five, this is my first time ever to read Charlotte’s Web. Yes, I know, shame on me, but let me explain. I was afraid – afraid that my little heart might not be able to handle the gloomy future that awaits the pig on the farm. But when I came across the 60th anniversary edition of the book, I completely changed my mind. It’s like love at first sight! (more like love at the first paragraph). When I read Kate DiCamillo‘s foreword I almost cried. It’s that feeling when your friend knows exactly how you feel. I couldn’t quite grasp the words written because she nailed it. It’s like reading your first ever job offer and you can’t believe it because you’ve been waiting for it all your life (waiting for it all summer after graduation). That’s exactly how I felt when I read the foreword, she brought my emotions to life about the book. It was lovely and what I liked most about it was its assurance.
“And things didn’t turn out well.
But they also did turn out well.” – Kate DiCamillo
I got sad that it didn’t turn out well, but also curious of how it turned out well. So, I explored the world of Wilbur the pig, Fern, and Charlotte the spider. Charlotte’s web is a touching story of an unlikely friendship between a pig and a spider. Where we see that there’s hope for everyone; where promises are not really broken but fulfilled. The story made you want to go back in time and see how E.B. White came up with this world.
Everything and everyone is valuable. Everyone is worth of being loved. The world is a beautiful canvas full of hope. It might not be picture perfect, sometimes it might not look good, and sometimes it might make you cry. But it doesn’t mean it’s the end of it. Life goes on. That’s what I learned from Wilbur’s life – it’s what I learned from what White wanted to pass on.
It’s a bad thing that I missed out on this during my childhood. But then again it’s not too bad.
E.B. White was an American writer who also wrote other children’s books: Stuart Little and The Trumpet of the Swan
